I have to admit that the first time I heard this song by Hillsong United I thought it was beautiful, but maybe a bit wistful, singing about someday when I go up yonder. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's wonderful to sing about heaven, because, I mean it's heaven, but I didn't totally see the relevance for the here and now.
However, the more I listen to it and talk about it with others, I've realized there's another really awesome revelation within the lyrics of this song.
When Jesus was on earth, he prayed these famous words "Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven..." I have to admit, I really haven't spent a whole lot of time trying to get past the King James English.*
Seriously, though....Jesus was teaching us to pray and he chose to start that way. That's got to be pretty significant. He was praying that God's rule and reign aka Heaven would come to earth. That's an awesome thought and you know what, He was telling us to pray the same way.
The more I sing this song, I think about that simple prayer. When I invited Jesus to come into my life, I invited the solution to all of the world's woes to come and inhabit my life. That's no small request. Now, I am by no means, insinuating that I have God's gift to the world... NO... that was Jesus :-) but, at the same time, I am not taking lightly the fact that He now runs my life and that means I am part of his solution for the earth.
How powerful to realize that when we enter into His presence and walk in His will we are experiencing Heaven on earth.
What do you think about the song? Is there a specific part that really stands out to you? What does Heaven on earth look like to you?
*Matt 6: 9-10 I'm also pretty sure Jesus didn't speak that way :-)

Lyrically, the most interesting, and arresting, thing about this song is its deceptive "futuristic" outlook. The songwriter seems to call for a distant day, but then concludes, "You hold me NOW." In the same way that we're seated with Christ in heavenly places, by faith, at this very moment, heaven, and all of its attributes, hold us now. Faith frees us from time and place - from the curse of the flesh - and into the realm of the eternal. He holds me now!
